Before the Fog Burns Off
On the water by 4am with the Billings crew. The harbor still dark, traps stacked six high on the stern.
There is a particular silence at the dock before first light — not quiet exactly, more like sound held in suspension. Diesel. Salt. The creak of lines. Eldon Billings has been running this route for thirty-one years and does not look at the water when he talks about it. He looks at his hands.
