The Series
Uncontaminated Sound is an ongoing photographic and conversational series centered on artists, performers, and the creative process.
Beginning with candid stills made backstage and around live performance, the project grew from a desire to document the rarely
seen moments surrounding the work: the gestures, exchanges, and personal histories that exist beyond the stage.
Through free-form, unscripted conversations, podcasting, radio broadcasts, and exhibitions, Uncontaminated Sound continues
that same observational approach. Intimate, curious, and intentionally unfiltered, the project creates space for artists to
speak openly about their lives, ideas, influences, and the experiences that shape what they make.

The Archives

Uncontaminated Sound began backstage at Le Poisson Rouge in 2017, with a camera trained on the moments surrounding performance. Since then, the series has grown into an extensive visual archive of artists across backstage spaces, portrait sessions, rehearsals, festivals, and live performance—looking beyond public persona toward the quieter gestures and unguarded moments that reveal the person behind the work.

Launched in 2020, the conversational arm of Uncontaminated Sound was created as an open forum for artists, educators, musicians, writers, and creatives across disciplines. Through free-form, unscripted interviews, the series welcomes a wide range of views and perspectives without judgment or agenda, while exploring creative process, personal history, culture, and the larger social conditions surrounding the work.
